Often we go through each day being our favorite super hero. You know the one leaping buildings in a single bound to get our kids to rehearsal on time, managing every aspect of world peace the world from the bat cave, working to be everything to everyone all the time. As great as it feels to be able to do that, how often do you actually succeed in hitting that mark? How often do you actually get to get the kids where they need to be, with everything they need; satisfy your work obligations; have the time you want to spend with your friends; and find a moment for yourself too?
Lara Galloway has quickly become one of my favorite sources of WAH inspiration and motivation. Her audio blog from this past Friday discussed the avoiding the traps that WAM’s often fall into. One of her tips touched on focusing on what you are good at, that makes you profitable and ‘outsourcing’ what isn’t bringing in money. Of course I’m paraphrasing, but the overall point was your time is your money.

I think this a tip that extends beyond the work life and into the personal life as well. I know I struggle with my SuperWoman complex on a day to day basis. I feel guilty when I’m unable to give my all to my son, my job, my business and my friendships. It’s not easy to allow other people to help me accomplish all the things that need to happen; it just doesn’t come naturally to me. Just as it’s helpful to outsource the work tasks that don’t make you rich, it’s ok to outsource or streamline the personal efforts that don’t enrich you emotionally or spiritually. It’s impossible to be everything to everyone all the time. But it is possible to give your all to the areas that will benefit you most. When you are happy and satisfied, you are able to make other happy and satisfied.

It’s been an interesting week for me; I’ve learned more about the spine that I ever thought I would need to know. The beauty of medical science, I tell ya!
Yesterdays post came from a very personal place. The post was a remind to not just all of you reading but to myself as well to take care of ourselves.
The care I needed to give myself came in the form of having a minor procedure done on my back Tuesday that is expected to relieve some pain I’ve been enduring for the past six months or so. Well unfortunately the procedure proved to be a little more painful than I’d prepared for.

Sometimes it’s really the little things that pick you up. In my coping, I treated myself to a delicious cinnamon latte thingamajig from Starbucks and a cinnamon coffee cake I’m sure the thingamajig reference gives away the fact that I don’t frequent Starbucks often lol. I used to go there a lot more often, but I chose to cut that treat out of my budget and replaced it with discovering new delicious and healthier teas. But on this day, a cup o’ Starbuck was what I wanted to make me smile…and it did.
So what’s have you been up to this week? What did you do to pick yourself up, and if needed get you moving through the rest of the week?

If you’ve been here to the blog before, you are aware that I devote every Friday to making sure you are taking time out of your busy schedule to do a little something for yourself; a little something to brighten your own day. There are times where the care you should give to yourself is more than a trip to the spa, or treating yourself to a new book. When your mental or physical health needs attention, it truly is important to take the appropriate amount of time to rest and recuperate.
Often we feel the pressures of life, work, family, and other commitments and allow those to take priority, thinking ‘Oh I can handle it’ or ‘I don’t feel that bad, I can push through it and rest later’. Sometimes waiting until ‘later’ can make the difference between being a little ill or having a major breakdown.
We have to keep Picking Our Afros because it’s always important keep our spirits uplifted and doing those little things for ourselves make us smile. It’s ultimately important to keep our health in as best shape as we have control over. Take your time and take care of you!

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.”

It’s been quite some time since I’ve picked my Afro both off and online. Today is the first day of remedying that! Pick Your Afro Friday is back, and I’m sorry to kept it away, please forgive me.
Wednesday evening, I found myself completely clueless as to what I was going to cook for dinner. I love to cook, but I dislike having to do it under time constraints. I like to be able to get in the kitchen and enjoy the preparation and cooking process; hard to do when you have a family to not just feed them, but make sure they are bathed, spend a little time with and in to bed at a decent hour.
In search of inspiration for something to do with the ground turkey sitting in my ‘fridge, I ran, not walked directly to allrecipes.com because that is my favorite place to find recipes. I’ve never walked away from that site without finding something I wanted to try. Sure enough I stumbled onto this receipt for Turkey and Blue Cheese Meatballs. Yummy!
Before I realized it, I’d spent over an hour looking for more and more recipes to try when I have the time to really dig in and ‘put my foot in them’. Taking the time out to look for fun new recipes truly was the relaxing highlight of my busy week.
Although PYAF hasn’t been online in a little while I hope that you lovely reader have still been picking your fabulous ‘fros. So let’s hear it. What have you done for yourself that has brought a smile to your face? If you haven’t yet it’s still early, what are you planning to do? Remember, if you don’t then how can anyone else?
