Welcome back!

Through talking to friends around the country, and through my own personal experience, I realized this week how hard the cold and flu season is hitting this year (and I’m not talking about H1N1, either). This made me wonder if there was any way we could use essential oils, through aromatherapy, to ease the pain and discomfort so many people are going through right now. Turns out, there is.
There are several key essential oils that have proven to both ease cold and flu symptoms and help to clear up the infections that cause them. This is by no means a definitive list, but the following are the most commonly cited essential oils for these purposes. Following the list of oils is a few of the most effective ways to use them for cold and flu relief.
What to Use
Eucalyptus – has a fresh, woody scent and helps open airways and clear mucous, in addition to easing coughs. It is good for any kind of respiratory infection, or bronchial condition. It also works well for soothing achy muscles.
Peppermint – is also good for respiratory illnesses and nausea. It has a cooling scent and sensation due to the menthol in it, which is especially helpful for dry coughs and sinusitis. Peppermint essential oil is also an antiseptic, and can help kill germs inside the body, as well as in the air.
Lavender – can help on many fronts as well. It can help respiratory ailments, such as asthma, colds and bronchitis. It can also relieve the nausea and achy muscles associated with colds and flues.

Tea Tree – this essential oil is a powerhouse. It can be used to kill bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. It is an expectorant and extremely useful in clearing up coughs and mucous. It also stimulates the immune system, making it easier for the body to fight off infection.
Rosemary – Use this for its anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antiseptic properties.

Lemon – is far more than just a tasty fruit. It helps bring down fever, boosts the immune system, detoxifies the body, and helps ease and treat sore throats as well. That is part of the reason why it is so good to put in tea when you are not feeling well.
Ginger – is helpful for virtually every cold and flu symptom. It is a warming essential oil, so it helps reduce the chills associated with fever in addition to the sore, achy muscles. Ginger also helps alleviate nausea, sore throat and diarrhea.
Cinnamon – has a warming effect too. Respiratory tract symptoms can be eased by cinnamon, as can aches and pains and fever chills.

How to Use Them
Diffusers and Vaporizers – These are common methods of aromatherapy. During a cold or flu, a vaporizer may be more helpful, because it sterilizes the air as it steams it, killing all germs to pass through. You could also steam yourself the old-fashioned way…over a pot of boiled water, with a towel over your head. 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil will do it!
In the Bath - This is a great way to target sore muscles and inhale some decongesting vapors at the same time. Any preferred combination of the above oils would be great. Just remember that 5 – 10 drops in an entire tub is all that is needed. Anything more than that could be irritating to the skin, as some of the essential oils are very strong. You could also combine your essential oils with Epson or sea salts and use them in the bath.
Use a Rub – A few drops of any of the appropriate essential oils can also be combined with a carrier oil like sweet almond, jojoba, or even olive oil and rubbed on the skin to alleviate aches and/or open airways. Think Icy/Hot and/or VapoRub.
Nasal Inhaler – Use a small glass tube or container. Put 1/4 teaspoon of coarse salt in there with a few drops of whichever essential oil or oils, you prefer to decongest with, and sniff whenever you are feeling stuffed up.
Finally, Some Relief!
With so many essential oils for the job, and so many ways to use them, you are sure to find a combination that works for you! Try out the different methods to see which ones are most practical and effective for you. It all depends on your preferences and the symptoms you are experiencing at the time. That is one of the beauties of aromatherapy; it can be completely tailored to suit your needs. So experiment, and feel better soon!!!
~Most essential oils are harmless, but some can be a little irritating to the skin if used in pure form, so just make sure you don’t overdo it until you know how they will affect you. Asthmatics in general must be careful to not inhale too much of a strong substance until they know how they react to it.
