Last week I talked about how I prepared my hair for my trip to upstate NY. I’m super glad I did because it was cooooooold! The wind was whipping about, the temp dropped below 30 every night, and we even got some snow on the last night there. I loved it because it made the time at home really feel like home.
My hair was happy because it was well prepared and protected. I returned with hair just as soft as when I left. However, my scalp and my skin we’re nearly as happy. I neglected to prepare for the results that the cold weather would have on my actual skin, not just my hair.
After the first two days, my scalp began to let me know that I’d failed. I noticed I was scratching my head a bit more than usual. A day or so later, I noticed my nose was peeling in addition to in increased head scratching and that’s when I really knew I’d dropped the ball. By the sixth day, my head and my arms and legs were itching. Ugh! I’m conditioned to this Houston warmth and humidity.
In retrospect, what I should have done in advance was condition my skin the same way I conditioned my hair. I should have used an oil blend on my scalp to coat and protect it. I should have used a body oil (especially considering I carry a pretty awesome one in my Classic line!) all over my body prior to the trip to coat and protect it too and then packed that oil to take with me for an every other day application after a bath.
It’s definitely true what they say “Hindsight is 20/20”. Next Thanksgiving, I’ll be well prepared because I do not want to endure this again. It’s going to take me the next two or three days to get my skin back in order. You Northerners (*giggle * like I’m not one too) need to make sure you are taking extra special care of your bodies in the winter time. Don’t suffer with dry, itchy skin like me LOL
