Use Aromatherapy to Help with The Winter “Blahs”

by Jamie on February 2, 2010

Welcome back!

UGH. Now that the holiday lights are gone, the winter has set into my bones. I’ve been unusually tired and, and do NOT want to get up in the mornings. So instead of the post I had planned, I’m going to tell you what I just found about aromatherapy and conquering the winter “Blahs”.

So, the first thing I wanted to know was which essential oils are best for energy, vitality and combating depression. Here is a short list of the ones I came across the most.

Essential Oils to Beat the Winter Blues

  • Rosemary
  • Peppermint
  • Lavender
  • Eucalyptus
  • Orange
  • Lemon
  • Bergamot
  • Clary Sage
  • Grapefruit
  • Jasmine
  • Sandalwood

This isn’t even all of them!!! And, of course, there are so many ways to use these essential oils to boost your spirits…you could:

Make a bath oil – by adding 15-20 drops of any combination of the oils above to a carrier oil, like sweet almond oil. (See my carrier oils posts for more information) Be mindful of which essential oils can irritate the skin and only use them sparingly.

Blend into bath salts – this time use your essential oils in  3 cups of Dead Sea salt, Epsom salt or regular sea salt. 15-20 drops this time as well. Add one tablespoon of a carrier oil for more moisturization. Make sure your bath salts are mixed very well each time you use them. Use 1/2-1 cup per bath. Again, be mindful of which EOs you are using.

Diffuse them – by putting 6 drops of essential oil into your diffuser. For maximum effect. Leave the room for a few minutes and return.

A handkerchief or flannel - can be used when a quick “pick-me-up” is needed. Add one or two drops of an essential oil to the fabric and inhale.

There are countless “recipes” online for different energizing blends of oil, if you don’t have the patience or funds to puzzle it out on your own. Here is the most helpful link I found in my journey.

http://www.aromaweb.com/recipes/energize.asp – AromaWeb has just about all the aromatherapy info and recipes you will ever need, including these blends of energizing oils.

And, if mixing isn’t really your style, you’d rather have somebody make your products for you. This can be easily accomplished. Many companies offer blends of essential oils already combined.

Bath and body products are available already mixed for you, too! Mainelement:Love has the perfect energizing scent for starting your day (or revving it up), Rise and Shine! Le’amour body butter, sugar scrub, bath oil, bath bombs and body wash are ALL available in Rise and Shine, which is a wonderful citrusy fragrance. Our treasured tresses conditioner also comes in two wonderfully peppy fragrances, Rosemary and Bergamot, or Peppermint and Vanilla.

Now that I am appropriately armed, you are too. :) I will definitely be experimenting in the near future…do you have a special energizing blend that already works for you? I’d love to hear about it!
