Welcome back!
Another break away from my fast paced, go-go-go lifestyle is on the horizon (I made my life sound way more exciting that it honestly is LOL) . Last weekend I successfully managed to work some Me Time into my schedule. This weekend there I’ll be hanging out with the blood born and ‘adopted by friendship’ family. The Pasadena Strawberry Festival is this weekend and I’ve been itching to get out and enjoy a festival or two since I’ve moved to Houston almost two years ago. The website boasts a variety of events and activities that I know the kids will love so we’ll be heading down tomorrow evening after it cools off outside.
There might be a video up from our trip in the near future…maybe!
Enough about me, what are YOU doing for yourself this weekend? Or have you already Picked Your Afro this week? That’s even better. Do tell!

Every Friday, no matter what the circumstances, I call it Fabulous Friday. Why? Pick a reason! We made it through the work week. We woke up to see another day. We are sooo close to the weekend and hopefully a little R&R. The list goes on. Its Friday…Fabulous!
Have I Picked My Afro? No, not even close. I’d be happy to say that picking my afro this week will entail lots of sleep! But I know I can’t quite get away with that; the PYAF followers would have my head (Erica!) I am going to pick it this weekend though, it’s already planned. I have some exclusive Me Time planned for Sunday afternoon and I’m going to go lie out in the sun, read a book, turn on the iPod and just zone out. Ahhhh, I can see it, I can feel it, I can almost touch it!
What do you have planned for this Mother’s Day weekend? Are you planning to pick your afro on Sunday? If you’re not a Mom, are you planning to help a mom Pick Her Afro? Mom’s needs need to keep their afro’s fly too ya know!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mommies!

*singing* “It’s Friday, its Friday, it’s the end of the week and the last day!” There’s more to the song and my Ryan Cameron fans can sing the rest for us LOL! Man, its good to see Friday again. It’s been an amazing week, I have to admit. If you look back through the archives this month you will see that I missed not one but two PYAF postings. I simply hadn’t done anything for myself, nor did I have anything projected to do for myself. This week however I’ve worked HARD and I’m playing HARD; hard enough to make up for the times this month that I didn’t do anything for myself
Last night I attended the first night of the women conference “Women at the Feet of Jesus” at my church First Metropolitan Church here in Houston. As a woman who was not raised in the church and has had the pleasure of learning because I want to and not because I was forced to as a child, this is my first religious conference and it has already turned out to be so much more than I anticipated it would be. I have to ask you all to please take a look into psalmist Dr. Karen D. Taylor and Rev. Dr. Jasmin Scurlark because these are women who will turn you upside down and then place you right side up with a fresh breath of air with the word they deliver. I’ll be attending the conference again on Saturday to wrap up the final day of my ‘Work hard, play hard’ PYAF moment.
Tomorrow night I’ll be unable to attend the conference because of a prior engagement. There’s a concert of a few of my favorite artists: Mos Def, Ledisi, Bilal, and Stokely of Mint Condition that I’d already purchased tickets for. I was so excited when I heard about this show that I bought the absolute best seats I could find because I am an avid music lover. They say music soothes the savage beast. Well after the monstrous schedule I’ve kept this week, I am in serious need of soothing. Talk about right on time!
So this will put me back in the black on picking my afro for the month. Are you current with your afro picking? Have you been putting off doing something for yourself? “Too busy”, “can’t afford it”, “but they need me” are phases that are not allowed. Doing something uplifting for yourself doesn’t have to cost your entire paycheck; it doesn’t have to cost a dime. Read your favorite book; spend some time outside enjoying the spring weather, pick up take yourself out for a cup of coffee, your favorite dessert. The options are endless. So…tell us how you’ve Picked Your Afro this week!

Happy Friday! I think this has been one of the longest weeks in quite some time. Maybe because it’s the week before a holiday; those always seem long. Or maybe it’s because I procrastinated on a major project last week and am suffering the consequences this week. Either way, I am welcoming Friday as I’m sure everyone else is too!
I’m especially welcoming it because I’m so very excited about Picking My Afro. With this Friday being a holiday for many, there’s no school and my day care has closed too; which means, I’m bringing my son with me to work. I’m blessed to have a very wonderful manager and not many people will be in the office so he’ll go practically unnoticed. The fact that he’s nine and all he really cares about is his Nintendo DS and reading books, only aids to the anticipated invisibility.
Some people would find taking their child to work with them a headache, and for some with good reason. For me, I’m so excited! I love introducing my son to people. He’s so personable, and funny (yes I’m biased, I know!) you can’t help but love him. And since our time together seems to always fly by, I’m happy to have him with me for the day.
So what about you? It’s Friday; another week has come and is almost gone. Have you Picked You Afro yet? What have you done to put a well deserved smile on your face?

It’s been an interesting week for me; I’ve learned more about the spine that I ever thought I would need to know. The beauty of medical science, I tell ya!
Yesterdays post came from a very personal place. The post was a remind to not just all of you reading but to myself as well to take care of ourselves.
The care I needed to give myself came in the form of having a minor procedure done on my back Tuesday that is expected to relieve some pain I’ve been enduring for the past six months or so. Well unfortunately the procedure proved to be a little more painful than I’d prepared for.

Sometimes it’s really the little things that pick you up. In my coping, I treated myself to a delicious cinnamon latte thingamajig from Starbucks and a cinnamon coffee cake I’m sure the thingamajig reference gives away the fact that I don’t frequent Starbucks often lol. I used to go there a lot more often, but I chose to cut that treat out of my budget and replaced it with discovering new delicious and healthier teas. But on this day, a cup o’ Starbuck was what I wanted to make me smile…and it did.
So what’s have you been up to this week? What did you do to pick yourself up, and if needed get you moving through the rest of the week?
